Marshfield Area Pet Shelter

In September 2011, a small group of community members took the time to review the current process for handling stray animals for the City of Marshfield. In reviewing the process, a necessity was realized; our community desperately needed a humane pet shelter to call its own and more importantly, our pets deserved a higher quality of care than they had been afforded for many years. That year, the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter (MAPS) began its mission for animals. In February 2012, MAPS was established as a non-profit organization to promote the humane treatment of animals and provide protection, care and shelter for unwanted and homeless animals. In January 2013, MAPS acquired a parcel of land in the Air Business Park on Marshfield’s south side at the end of the cul-de-sac on Downwind Drive to build their new home. In October 2013, volunteers renovated an empty space inside the Marshfield Mall so MAPS could have a physical presence in the community. MAPS began housing adoptable cats at that location in February 2014. The space was known as the Adoption Center. In June 2015, MAPS retrofitted an old airport terminal building at 210 W 29th Street to begin taking in Marshfield's stray animals for the city. From Oct 2013 to March 2020, MAPS operated within two separate locations: their intake shelter on 29th Street and the Adoption Center inside Marshfield Mall. The adoption center was permanently closed in March 2020 due to covid-19 restrictions. In August 2019, after many years of fundraising for a new facility, a groundbreaking ceremony was held and construction began in Sept 2019. In August 2020: MAPS moved into its 9,000 sq ft brand new state-of-the-art facility located at 3500 Downwind Dr (behind Slumberland and across from Wildwood Animal Hospital).
